 zijn gemaakt (t/m 1988).

In het 717 pagina's tellende boek wordt elk nummer uitvoerig toegelicht.

Singles are the essence of rock and roll. They occupy the center of all the pop music

that came after it.  (.) After 1970, when Charlie Gillett published his singles-based The

sound of the city : the rise of rock &  roll, the first serious history of the music that

descended from rhythm and blues, the story has always  been told in terms of albums,

and virtually albums only. There are many source books discussing the points 

of the greatest rock-era albums; this is the first that tries to define a similar group of singles.

As with many things for which I have no words of my own, there is a record that

expresses what I'm talking  of. Cold on the page, without the baion bass and strings and

the crying in the singer's voice, it may tell only  a part of the story. But I'll put what it says

here anyway, in hope that that fragment is enough. It's a record  by the Drifters, written by

Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, sung
