Chef platen - Harry van Nieuwenhoven 1948-2004

 

Afgelopen weekeinde sijpelde het nieuws door op de Mega platen en cd beurs in Utrecht. Er werd gespeculeerd: hoeveel van de duizenden aangeboden elpees had hij besproken of 'uitgezet' bij zijn corps recensenten.? Harry van Nieuwenhoven, bijna 25 jaar chef Platen bij Muziekkrant Oor (later Oor) was enkele dagen tevoren aan een hartstilstand overleden,

Oprichter Barend Toet herinnert zich zijn entree nauwelijks meer. Hij was er gewoon opeens. In het licht sjofele gezelschap van het eerste uur was Harry van Nieuwenhoven - keurig in het pak, fris geknipt en met een betrekking bij het ministerie van Economische zaken - nochtans een opvallende verschijning. Na wat losse besprekingen coördineerde hij vanaf 1973 de pijler van het blad, de recensierubriek. Hij combineerde daarbij administratieve degelijkheid die hij overdag bij de Directie Prijsbeleid (sectie kappersbedrijven en bejaardentehuizen) aan de dag legde met een scherp gehoor en een enorm schrijftempo. Alles wat deftiger recensenten lieten liggen, besprak hij, als eindverantwoordelijke, zelf. Het ging er soms fel aan toe. Zangeres Margiet Eshuijs, en een van zijn favorieten, besloot na een stukje tekstontleding van zijn hand voorlopig maar geen nummers zelf meer te schrijven.

Dat hij ook ging interviewen (Bob Marley, Elton John, die tijdens het gesprek in huilen uitbarstte) en bovendien 's nachts met concertrecensies de Haagsche Courant bediende, moet zijn conditie geen goed hebben gedaan. Tussen de bedrijven door paste hij buiten de Haagse hoerenbuurt weleens op de koffer (met gage) als manager en artiest het optreden van een toegift voorzagen. Drugs waren taboe, sigaretten en alcohol vanzelfsprekend toegestaan.

Directiesecretaresse Marijcke Haccou van Oor's uitgeverij Keihard & Swingend zag hem uit een ooghoek op woensdagmiddagen wapperend met hoezen en Right on! en Sock it to me! roepend, zijn rubriek in elkaar zetten, maar een relatie onstond pas op het Hitkrant gala met Abba. 'Toen we met onze platencollecties een Amsterdams pand betrokken, moesten er zestien extra balken worden aangebracht.'

Van settelen was geen sprake. Tijdens een clubopening stortte hij tegen de ochtend twee etages naar beneden om aansluitend met de trein naar het ministerie te reizen. Alleen het straaltje bloed vanuit zijn hoofd verraadde het dubbelleven van de ambtenaar. Halverwege de jaren negentig kwam er zand in de machine. Eerst werden de prijzen vrijggegeven en hief het ministerie zijn controlesectie op. Vervolgens werd hij, na de overgang van Oor naar De Telegraaf, bedankt voor bewezen diensten. Haccou: 'Dat raakte hem in het hart.' Een sterk gevoel voor rechtvaardigheid en een aangeboren achterdocht deden hem na die ervaringen besluiten 'de pen neer te leggen', ook al kreeg hij verzoeken om elders te publiceren.

Hij runde het huis, hield als altijd de muziek bij, was actief in de Vereniging van hun appartementencomplex. Een hevig conflict met die Vereniging werd hem fataal. Voor een vergadering ging hij onderuit, kwam bij, voegde een 'foute kracht' nog 'en donder jij op naar Frankrijk' toe om voorgoed uit zijn stoel te vallen.

Op de crematie werden de volgende nummers gedraaid:  Dusty Springfield Goin' back, Marvin Gaye Let's get it on. En Roosje, het smartlap-singletje dat hij ooit zelf in plat-Haags had opgenomen.
